The courtesan was regularly kept by a particular man, who dressed her and gave her jewelry but kept her company with several others. Sometimes, she would accompany him to a social function if his wife was unavailable.
By the late 18th century, courtesans were common in high society and, in many ways, accepted. However, before that, they were sometimes accused of witchcraft if someone wanted to remove them from court. Competition among courtesans was also fierce, and many fought back to succeed.
Many of these ladies began their careers by assisting a fellow courtesan, learning the ropes from her, and moving on. Becoming an escort gave these naked girls immense freedom. They earned substantial sums of money and were free to make decisions. They did not have to depend on a husband; if their clients had too many demands, they would pass them on to their schedule.
In general, today’s nude girls are very similar to courtesans. Escorts set their schedules, choose their clients, and enjoy a sense of freedom that is rare even today for many strippers.
